How to Store Perfume So It Lasts (and Why Decants Help)

Niche and luxury fragrance bottles

Perfume has no printed expiry date, but it can go off. Three things do the damage: heat, light and oxygen. Control those and a well-made fragrance can last five years or more; ignore them and a bottle can turn sour in eighteen months.

The three enemies

  • Heat speeds up every chemical reaction in the bottle. Repeated warm-cool cycles are worse than steady cool storage.
  • Light, especially direct sun and UV, breaks down the lighter citrus and floral materials first, which is why the top notes are the first thing to fade in an old bottle.
  • Oxygen reacts with the fragrance every time air enters the bottle. A half-empty bottle has more air in it than a full one, so it ages faster.

Where to keep it

  • Not the bathroom. It is the warmest, most humid room in the house, and the temperature swings with every shower.
  • In the box, in a drawer or wardrobe. Dark, dry and at a steady room temperature is ideal. The box is not just packaging; it is a light shield.
  • Away from windows and radiators. A dresser top in a sunny bedroom is the most common mistake.
  • The fridge is optional. A dedicated small fridge works well for collectors, but the main food fridge brings odours and condensation. Room temperature in a dark drawer is enough for most people.

How long does an opened bottle last?

Stored well, most eaux de parfum keep their character for three to five years after opening, sometimes much longer. Fresh citrus colognes are the most fragile; rich ambers, woods and orientals are the most robust. Signs a fragrance has turned: a sharp, vinegary or metallic opening, a noticeably darker colour, and top notes that vanish within seconds.

Why decants help

Decanting is how collectors protect big bottles. Pouring 10 ml into a travel atomizer means the full bottle stays sealed in its box in the dark, and the small vial takes the daily knocks, warmth and light. Our Minis and Travels are filled from bottles stored exactly this way, in a cool, dark workspace in Los Angeles, and shipped within about a day of filling, so what you receive is fresh.

Looking after your decant

Keep the atomizer upright, cap on, out of direct sun, and use it within a year or so for best results. A 5 ml Mini is designed to be used up in weeks, not stored for years. Browse Niche & Luxury for the fragrances most worth protecting, or Shop All.
