Perfume is allowed on planes, in both carry-on and checked luggage. The only question is how much, and in what container. Here is the practical version of the rules for travellers departing from US airports.
Carry-on: the 3-1-1 rule
The TSA's liquids rule applies to perfume because it is a liquid. Each container must hold 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all containers must fit in a single quart-size clear bag, and each passenger gets one bag. It is the container size that counts, so a half-empty 150 ml bottle is still not allowed through, while a 5 ml Mini or 10 ml Travel atomizer is far under the limit. Many airports now have scanners that let you leave liquids in your bag, but the size limit still applies.
Checked luggage
Full-size bottles can go in checked bags. Perfume counts as a toiletry under FAA rules, which allow containers of up to 500 ml (about 17 oz) and a total of 2 litres per passenger. Pack glass bottles in the middle of the case, wrapped in clothing, and keep the cap on: cabin pressure changes rarely cause leaks, but rough handling breaks glass.
Why decants are the easy answer
- A 10 ml Travel gives you 100–150 sprays, which covers two to three weeks of daily wear.
- The vial weighs a few grams and takes almost no room in the liquids bag.
- If it leaks or gets lost, you have lost $15 or $20, not a $200 bottle.
- You can bring three or four scents for different evenings instead of committing to one.
Tips from frequent flyers
- Keep the atomizer upright in the liquids bag and slip it into a small zip bag as a second barrier.
- Do not store perfume in the hold of a very hot or very cold car on the way to the airport; heat is what degrades fragrance, not altitude.
- If you are flying internationally, the 100 ml carry-on limit is near-universal, so the same decant works in both directions.
